Back to the internet...

OK so I am back to the idea of building an internet business. As fast as I can.
So I have signed up for some kind of mentorship that is already starting to disappoint me, but this time I have decided that I've had enough and I will follow-through. I have been a quitter often enough, signing up for something only to be disappointed and give it all up, without even trying to get everything I can from the experience and potential opportunity.
So now I have mentors there to answer my questions in my quest to build an internet business, and I will put them to good use.
One of the things I find difficult in this new venture is the information overload.
I have so many e-books and seminars saved somewhere on my hard drive and that I haven't read or listened to yet.
If I started to really dig into that information - well the mere thought of it feels overwhelming...
So I'll start with the basics.
I need to set up a website. In order to do that, I need to find a good domain name, buy it, find hosting that isn't incredibly expensive but still gives me all I need, and create a first basic page. I don't know anything about html, so I can start with templates. Then, we'll see.
I need to be careful not to overdo it and spend 23 hours non-stop working on the computer, only to get downstairs for breakfast with bloodshot eyes and a depression on the way... I need to pace myself.
Also I need to alternate doing phases with learning phases with play phases with connection with people phases... Otherwise I'll just end up insane within a week...
Oh yes, and remember that I don't need to re-invent the wheel... Ask for help from people who have done it before.
OK I'll leave it here for tonight, we'll see how it goes tomorrow.

I'm a big fan of DreamHost for hosting. Good luck!

There's a lot of different hosting places about, and there's any number of ways to set up web pages, etc.,. . . . but here's a thought:

Are you not perhaps putting the cart in front of the horse?

An internet business requires a business. . . .

Why spend time [and money!] for an internet presence for something that does not - yet - exist?

First things first, m'dear. You seem to be rushing your fences and swayed by every passing breeze and thought.

If you're convinced that an internet business is what you really want to do, first figure out what the business is and set up the model before you go out and rent virtual "office space". If you're not willing to do that, I'd have to ask if you're willing to do the hard work of starting an actual business or whether you're just doing the busy-work of trying to make it look good. (sorry - I don't mean that as harsh as it sounds).

I've said this before, but you might take some pressure off yourself if you got even a part-time job - maybe in a little cafe somewhere. You'd be around people; you'd have a bit more of a schedule; and I'm thinking you wouldn't have as much opportunity to go off the deep end. . . .

Take a deep breath and relax! You will not starve, and life is not about 'getting everything right', right away! It's a process. And it takes time.

Hey prophet,
yes you are right. I feel scattered and it is not easy to make up my mind about what to do, especially when I am putting up so many obstacles on my own way...
I keep going back and forth between job and internet, and end up doing nothing.
I seem to enjoy staying in the "poor me I don't have money" space at the moment. And yes I shy away in front of the hard work of setting up an internet website, especially when I am not convinced that it is really the way...
Hmmm. thanks for calling me out on it.

You're welcome.

Maybe just a little step today. One little step that doesn't first require you to figure out the whole rest of your life, so that you know which little step you could take?

Maybe visit a temporary employment agency and fill out an application.

Or even volunteer: maybe an animal shelter, and volunteer to walk some dogs for an hour every other week? Or go visit an old-age home this Tuesday. Something.

But nothing too much.

Just one little small step.

Then - later - the next.

Hi NewMoonAngel!

Cool to hear about your plans! I wish you good luck!

If you want some hosting to start off with before it becomes serious, you can use some of mine, I have a big reseller package with room to spare, that I use for me and my friends. You should buy the domain name yourself though through an independent company, it will be one of your most important business assets.

Just mail me if you need any help on the technical side of things, you know where to find me!

I do agree with prophet though, you should start with the business (or at least the idea), and then build a website. It will make for a better website too, otherwise it will be all over the place.

It's also very hard to make money off the internet unless you're actually selling something (e.g. a webshop). Because most people will expect the web content itself to be free.

And even with a webshop it takes a lot of work, you have to be on the ball. Several of my friends have a webshop besides their regular job and none of them are making serious money off it. It takes a lot of time advertising your shop, making sure your pricing is in the right range, and answering customer's questions.

I wouldn't read too many books on how to run an internet business, once you know what you want to do you could read up on more specific things relating to the kind of business you want to have.

Ha Tycho, thanks so much.
I am thinking I might go for a blog first, but will let you know if/when I need help for hosting and website building... I know you are great at it :)

And prophet. Yes. Gee I find it really hard to even take that baby step approach. I seem to be waiting for something to fall from the sky... Dammit!
